Chapter Twenty-Three

Mr. Brennan dropped me off around the corner to my house so my parents wouldn’t see and I gave him a final smile before dragging myself up the drive. It should have been elation, but melancholy had taken over. Oscar, the guy I’d had sex with last night, was back to Mr. Brennan now.

I’d gotten a once in a life time experience, and I should have been grateful, but selfishly, I wanted more.

I opened my door with a heavy heart, not even having the effort to argue with my parents tonight. I’d go upstairs, go to bed, and tomorrow I’d be renewed to let them know how much I despised the fact I’d had to give up my dream because of them.

Kicking off my shoes and hanging up my coat, my mouth didn’t lift. I was home, but I didn’t want to be here.

“Violet!” My father called through from the kitchen. I groaned, half tempted to rifle through for some headphones in the hope I could pretend I’d not heard him. He stuck his head around the door before my plan could be realised. “Can you come in the kitchen, please?”

I dithered, then sighed. “I hope this is to apologise for ruining my dreams.”

“It isn’t. We did that in your best interests and we stand by it.” He told me without looking back. His voice was hard, and my eyebrows knitted. As far as they knew, I’d just stayed at Marla’s. That had never been an issue before.

My mum sat at the table, tapping away, but she shut her laptop the second I appeared in the doorway. I leant against the doorframe, unwilling to come in further. My father tapped a chair at the table, but I shook my head, and waited. “What do you want?”

“Have you finished your university application?” The deadline was tomorrow.

“No, and I won’t be doing. Is that all? I think I’m going to go and lock myself in my room now.” I couldn’t stay here any longer. I tried to remember the exact balance I’d been told when I took the money out of the bank for Mr. Brennan. It was more than enough to live by myself for a year until I could get a job.

Moving out wasn’t unrealistic.

My stomach tightened as I looked at my parents. Moving out wasn’t anything I’d seriously considered before. We’d always gotten along fine living in the same space. We’d been the perfect family.

Now, though, even being in their presence made me angry. They’d destroyed the one thing that I cared about most. If I stayed here, they’d continue to meddle, and I’d never be independent.

If I moved out, I could get a job, outgrow the shares and sell them, and be my own person. They’d put their company ahead of me, and I wanted nothing more to do with it.

My resolve settled, I gave a sickly sweet smile, and turned to leave.

“Violet, why did you withdraw three thousand pounds yesterday?”

My body froze. That was my account. My account.
